Intercultural Urban Design Dialogue Between Istanbul and Dubai

Istanbul Nişantaşı University hosted “Intercultural Urban Pavilion: A Dialogue Between Istanbul and Dubai” on 7–9 November 2024. The three-day international event included a seminar, practical workshop and final design competition to develop intercultural dialogue through architecture and urban design.

Participants explored relationships between urban culture, identity and space through the distinct cultural and urban characteristics of Istanbul and Dubai. Student designs provided a basis for considering how cities’ cultural values can be reflected in architecture.

During the workshop, interdisciplinary student teams developed innovative urban pavilion designs reflecting intercultural values. This professional training activity enabled students to apply theory and develop design thinking skills.

The workshop concluded with a design competition. Among projects recognised for creativity, contextual sensitivity and collaboration, first prize went to Mohamad Daaboul and second prize to Alimata Bouare, Diakite Kibily Demba, Mostafa Eshak and Abuk Deng Macham Angui.

The event helped students consider urban environments from different cultural perspectives, gain interdisciplinary experience and develop architectural design skills through practical work.
