A Joint Student Research Ecosystem Linking Istanbul Nişantaşı and Harvard

A model developed with Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak’s mentorship will involve students in research projects beginning on campus. Publications, experience in Harvard research settings, and peer mentoring aim to build a lasting research culture.
Istanbul Nişantaşı University is creating a new academic ecosystem together with scientists working at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, involving students in real research processes during their university years. Research beginning on campus will evolve into a sustainable model enriched by scientific mentorship, international research experience, publications, conferences and new projects.
Istanbul Nişantaşı University is launching a new research and academic development model that will introduce students to scientific research early in their university education.
Developed under the scientific mentorship of Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak, who works at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, the model brings student research teams to be formed at Istanbul Nişantaşı University together with Harvard’s current research environment within a shared academic cycle.
The program aims to support young people with strong research potential, particularly students in the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and in health sciences, in participating in scientific production early, learning about international research culture and beginning to shape their academic paths while still students.
Students Will Participate Directly in Research
The model begins on the Istanbul Nişantaşı University campus.
Faculty-led research projects will be opened to students, with teams of 5–7 formed for each project. Working with faculty members for 12–24 months, students will take responsibility at every research stage, from developing questions and reviewing literature to forming hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, scientific writing and conference presentations.
Students will thus become direct participants in knowledge production, alongside reading the results of research.
This is the program’s central approach: scientific research will be a culture of thinking and production acquired during university education, rather than a career field beginning after student life.
Research in Istanbul Will Connect with Harvard’s Scientific Environment
The program’s international component will be developed through Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak’s research program at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham.
For Istanbul Nişantaşı University students and early-career researchers, this environment will serve as a “living research laboratory,” where they can observe ongoing scientific studies and become involved in suitable projects.
Students will have the opportunity to experience directly how an international research group carries out research planning, ethics procedures, data analysis, scientific discussion and publication preparation.
Developing their own research and defending it in English before an academic jury will also be an important stage of the model.
Student project leaders and early-career researchers who stand out in the evaluation are expected to spend 1–2 weeks in Harvard Medical School’s research environment, presenting their work, attending scientific meetings and closely observing research teams.
The central idea extends well beyond a university visit: developing students who can bring research produced in Istanbul into the international scientific arena.
Harvard Scientists Will Meet Students in Istanbul
Academic interaction will work in both directions.
Dr. Mehmet Furkan Burak is expected to meet regularly with Istanbul Nişantaşı University students and academics throughout the year, delivering seminars and mentorship activities on research and academic careers.
Harvard Science Day will be one of the program’s annual meeting points.
Planned for every May at Istanbul Nişantaşı University, Harvard Science Day will enable students to present the research projects they have developed throughout the year. Scientists joining from Harvard will also share their research and meet students and faculty members.
The campus will thus become an academic meeting place where students’ scientific work is discussed with international researchers and new research ideas emerge.
From Research to Academic Leadership
The program’s goals extend beyond scientific methodology skills.
Its academic leadership dimension will help students explore paths in research, clinical studies, innovation, technology and academia; learn how to access international research and internship programs; and gain experience in scientific communication, academic CV preparation and international career planning.
This approach will particularly enable students in medicine and health sciences to become familiar with the research world while still studying and explore future paths as researchers, clinician-scientists or academics.
Faculty Members Will Also Be Part of the Ecosystem
The new model will create a new research platform for Istanbul Nişantaşı University academics as well as students.
In addition to leading student research teams, faculty members are expected to participate in mentorship processes covering international project development, scientific collaboration, research funding and grant applications.
Where shared research interests emerge, the model also aims to enable data from Harvard research programs to be evaluated jointly with Istanbul Nişantaşı University academics, generate new research questions and turn studies into joint scientific publications.
Student projects, faculty research and international scientific collaborations will therefore develop within the same research ecosystem.
Students Visiting Harvard Will Bring Their Experience Back to Campus
An important feature of the model is the spread of acquired academic experience throughout the university.
Students participating in the Harvard research program will mentor new student research teams upon returning to Istanbul, share their experiences and contribute to training the next generation of researchers.
Each year, new participants will thus benefit from the knowledge and experience of students who have already completed the same research process.
The resulting structure will create an ongoing scientific cycle:
By bringing together Istanbul Nişantaşı and Harvard’s research environment, this ecosystem aims to establish a lasting academic culture in which students participate early in scientific production, faculty members develop international research networks and experience is passed on to new researchers.
