Astronaut Tuva Cihangir Atasever shared his spaceflight and training experience at the National Space Programme event, introducing students to space research and Türkiye’s goals.

The “National Space Programme” event at İstanbul Nişantaşı University NeoTech Campus was jointly organised by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, Turkish Space Agency, T3 Foundation, Department of Health, Culture and Sports, our Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, and our university’s Teknofest Club. Tuva Cihangir Atasever, one of the first Turkish astronauts sent into space by the Turkish Space Agency, participated as a speaker. At the well-attended event, he shared his experiences in space research and important insights into becoming an astronaut.

Atasever discussed topics ranging from the International Space Station’s function as a scientific laboratory and the arrangement of experimental equipment to the critical importance of emergency training. He explained how astronauts manage major emergencies such as fire, loss of atmosphere or pressure, and ammonia leaks.

Sharing his experiences of space travel, he discussed the challenges of microgravity and extensive training in areas such as wilderness survival and flight preparation. His account of changing gravitational forces during space travel, and his feelings and observations when leaving the atmosphere, offered participants a unique perspective.

Atasever discussed the Turkish Space Agency’s ten main objectives, space activities worldwide and the global exploration roadmap, including plans to establish habitats on the Moon and Mars. He emphasised that the ultimate goal, driven by humanity’s longstanding curiosity, is to establish a living environment on Mars.

Answering a question about astronaut selection, he explained that a military background is no longer required and that civilians now play important roles in space operations.

The event concluded with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation and flowers to Tuva Cihangir Atasever.
