Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener assessed Istanbul’s disaster risks and response plans during Earthquake Awareness Week, addressing earthquakes, climate-related disasters, interinstitutional coordination and preparedness.

Disaster Risks, Climate Change and Public Awareness

During March 1–7 Earthquake Awareness Week, Istanbul Nişantaşı University hosted an important event to raise disaster awareness and preparedness. AFAD Istanbul Provincial Director Prof. Dr. Haluk Özener shared valuable insights through his presentation “Istanbul Disaster Risk Reduction and Response Plans,” emphasizing the importance of awareness and preparation.

The event assessed Istanbul’s disaster risks in detail, particularly the economic implications of a potential Marmara earthquake. While earthquakes were highlighted as the city’s greatest threat, speakers emphasized that risks such as floods, inundation, fires, industrial and transport accidents, landslides, meteorological events and climate-related disasters must also be considered. Other risk factors included migration and population movements, environmental pollution and air pollution.

AFAD’s duties, responsible institutions and disaster management coordination mechanisms were examined in detail. Activities under the Türkiye Disaster Response Plan (TAMP) and Istanbul’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan were shared. Information on local TAMP coordination units highlighted the importance of effective cooperation in disaster response.

This valuable event once again demonstrated the necessity of understanding and preparing for Istanbul’s disaster risks. Together, we continue learning and strengthening our preparedness for an earthquake-resilient Istanbul!
