Panel on Look-Alike and Sound-Alike Medicines and Potential Hazards
The Panel on Look-Alike and Sound-Alike Medicines and Potential Hazards was held.
On 28 April 2026, the INU Faculty of Medicine hosted the panel “Look-Alike and Sound-Alike Medicines and Potential Hazards”, chaired by Prof. Dr. Emrah İpek, with the participation of Prof. Dr. Fadime Çınar, pharmacologist and pharmacist Vedat Eğilmez, and pharmacologist and pharmacist Betül Şerefoğlu Ak.
The panel addressed the risks posed by Look-Alike / Sound-Alike (LASA) medicines commonly encountered in clinical practice, using real case examples and discussing their effects on patient safety. Expert speakers comprehensively assessed the precautions needed at the prescribing, administration and monitoring stages, starting with medicine naming processes.
In line with safety strategies recommended by the World Health Organization and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, the event also emphasised the importance of raising awareness among healthcare professionals, strengthening education and expanding system-based solutions.
As an important part of our patient-centred safety approach, the panel made valuable contributions to our medical education and clinical practice.
